Two Jyotirlingas in Madhya Pradesh

After Maharashtra’s own five Jyotirlingas, the two in Madhya Pradesh are the next most requested pilgrimage from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar on the Narmada are a few hours apart, so they fit well into one trip, usually with Indore as a convenient stop.

Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain

Mahakaleshwar is famous for the early-morning Bhasma Aarti. Places for the aarti are limited and generally need advance booking through the temple’s official system, so arrange this before fixing your travel dates. Ujjain also has the Kshipra ghats, Harsiddhi temple and Kal Bhairav temple, which most pilgrims visit on the same day.

Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada, reached by bridges or boats, with the Mamleshwar temple on the opposite bank. Many devotees visit both. Allow time for walking and queues, and expect larger crowds on Mondays, in Shravan and on Mahashivratri.
