Beyond the Famous Sights

Most visitors to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar see Ajanta, Ellora, Daulatabad and Bibi Ka Maqbara and leave. The district has several quieter places that reward an extra day, especially for repeat visitors, local families looking for a weekend outing, photographers and small groups who prefer fewer crowds. Public transport to these places is limited, so a private cab is the practical way to reach them.

Mhaismal

Mhaismal, on the hills beyond Khuldabad, is often called the hill station of Marathwada. It is noticeably cooler than the city, particularly after the monsoon, and has viewpoints over the surrounding plateau, the Girija Devi temple and a Balaji temple. Because it lies on the same road as Ellora, Bhadra Maruti and Grishneshwar, it can be added to an Ellora day or visited on its own in the evening.

Pitalkhora Caves

Pitalkhora, in the Satmala hills in the north of the district, has some of the earliest Buddhist rock-cut caves in Maharashtra, older than most of Ajanta. The caves sit in a ravine reached by a descent of steps, and a seasonal waterfall flows nearby after the rains. Visitors are far fewer than at Ajanta or Ellora, which makes it a peaceful stop for history enthusiasts. Wear good shoes for the climb back up.

Gautala Autramghat Wildlife Sanctuary

Gautala, near Kannad, is a forested sanctuary in the Satmala and Ajanta hill ranges. It is known for birdlife and dry deciduous forest, and is greenest after the monsoon. Entry rules and timings are set by the Forest Department, so check them before travelling. Pitalkhora and Gautala lie in the same direction and can be combined in one long day.
