Why Visit Lonar
Lonar Lake in Buldhana district sits inside a crater formed by a meteorite impact in the basalt of the Deccan Plateau. The crater is about 1.8 km across and around 150 m deep, and the lake inside is both salty and alkaline. It is a National Geological Monument and was designated a Ramsar wetland in 2020. Old temples line the crater slopes, and the forest inside the rim attracts birdwatchers. Despite all this, far fewer visitors reach Lonar than Ajanta or Ellora, which makes it a rewarding extra day for anyone staying in Aurangabad.
Getting There from Aurangabad
Lonar is roughly 140–160 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar depending on route, and most visitors do it as a full-day round trip. Leave early to reach before the midday heat, especially if you plan to walk down to the lake.
