Understanding the Two Sites

Ajanta and Ellora were both inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983, but they are very different experiences and lie in different directions from the city. Ajanta, to the north, is a group of about 30 Buddhist caves cut into a horseshoe-shaped gorge above the Waghur river. It is famous above all for its paintings, some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art. Ellora, much closer to the north-west of the city, has 34 caves spanning three faiths: Buddhist caves at the southern end, Hindu caves in the middle and Jain caves to the north. Its highlight is Cave 16, the Kailasa temple, carved downwards from a single mass of rock.

Planning Ellora

Ellora is the easier of the two and suits a half or full day. Start early, because the Kailasa temple is at its best before the midday heat and crowds. The site is spread out along the hillside, and the Jain caves are some distance from the main group; the driver can move you between sections so you do not have to walk the full length in the sun. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays. On the same road you can add Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, which is very close to the caves; men are generally expected to remove their shirts before entering the inner sanctum, so carry a shawl or cloth. Khuldabad, with Bhadra Maruti and the tomb of Aurangzeb, and Daulatabad Fort are also on this route.

Planning Ajanta

Ajanta needs a full day. The drive from the city takes a few hours each way, and private vehicles do not go up to the caves themselves: visitors leave their car in the parking area near the visitor centre and take the shuttle bus to the base of the caves. From there, the caves are reached by a walkway along the gorge with steps at several points. Inside the painted caves the light is kept low to protect the murals, and flash photography is not allowed. Ajanta is closed on Mondays. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep some cash for the shuttle and entry tickets.

Suggested Itineraries

If your dates include a Monday or Tuesday, arrange the days so you are not arriving at a closed site. With only one day, choose one site properly rather than rushing both.

Best Time to Visit

The months after the monsoon and through winter are the most comfortable, with green hills and pleasant temperatures. During the monsoon, the Ajanta gorge is at its most dramatic and a waterfall flows at the head of the valley, though paths can be slippery. Summer afternoons are very hot at both sites, so early starts matter most between March and June. Weekends and holidays bring larger crowds, especially at Ellora.

Tips for a Better Visit

• Hire an approved guide at the site if you want the stories behind the sculptures and paintings.
• Carry a hat, water and light snacks; facilities inside the sites are limited.
• Keep a torch or phone light for darker caves, but never use flash on paintings.
• Senior travellers can visit Ellora comfortably; at Ajanta, allow extra time for the steps.
• Monument timings and ticket rules are set by the Archaeological Survey of India and can change, so check them before your visit.

Travelling Onward

Cave 1 holds the famous paintings of the Bodhisattva Padmapani and Vajrapani, among the best-known images of Indian art.
